Your Winter Camping Blog From Sumners Ponds

Winter camping blog | Flask amongst snow

Camping isn’t just for the summer months, winter camping in the UK is just as fun! Here is your winter camping blog, where we tell you what to bring, what to look out for, and how to have fun.

Places to camp in the winter

There are many places to camp in the winter, but if you’re looking for something either local or want to explore a new area, then Sumners Ponds is perfect for that.

We have high-quality facilities, acres of woodland with paths meandering, a working farm, 5 fishing lakes, and our very own Cafe by the Lake.

We are based in a lovely secluded area of West Sussex, which makes it perfect for calm and relaxing getaways. Or if you’re more of the active type, we have many walking and cycling paths that go through the site, and towards other parts of Sussex, like the South Downs.

You also have Brighton only half an hour away by car, and London is only an hour away too! These cities are perfect for those Christmas shopping days and seeing all the beautiful sparkling lights.

Your winter camping trip

Making sure you have everything you need for your winter camping trip is vital. When the temperature drops or the rain starts falling, you don’t want to be cold and wet with no extra warm clothes!

Packing for the worst is always a good idea, as then you’ll be prepared for anything! As Benjamin Franklin once said ‘by failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail”.

Our blog, UK Winter Camping Top Tips has lots of good tips on what to bring with you, such as bringing additional base and outer layers, blankets, and anything else that will keep you warm.

Here’s part of our checklist on what to bring for cold weather camping to stay warm:

  • Fleece
  • Jumper/Hoodie
  • Insulated waterproof jacket
  • Base layers
  • Gloves, hat & scarf
  • Extra t-shirts
  • Very thick socks (and bring plenty!)
  • Wellies and good walking boots
  • Blankets/throws
  • Hand warmers/hot water bottle
  • Four-season tent
  • Extra ground sheets and sleeping mats
  • High quality sleeping bag with an extra liner

Disabled Friendly

Sumners Ponds is a accessible fishery for those with a disability. The best lakes to fish are either Farm Pond or Betty’s Lake.

Farm Pond has a purpose built accessible platform with a ramp from the ajoining car park. This spaceous decked area has three large swims which are all disabled priority. The car park for this lake is directly next to the closest fishing swims so there is not far to travel with your equipment.

Betty’s Lake has two disabled parking areas which are very close to the nearest wood-chipped swims.
